5 Ways Owning a Small Business is Like Playing a Slot Machine

March 10, 20221 min read

I took a trip to Las Vegas recently.

When I wasn't spending time with my family, working, or sleeping, you could find me in the casino.

I played over 50 different slot machines (99% of those were penny slots), getting a feel for which ones I liked.

During that time, I was able to do a little self-reflection and of course that included thinking about my business. In the interest of keeping this short, I will not bore you with the random things I discovered. I'll save some of them for my book or comedy skit, whichever comes first.

It's been a while since I've shared a blog post, so here ya go.

Here are five ways owning a small business is like playing a slot machine.

  • There are different ways to play. You can invest as much as you are comfortable with, but each time you play you take a risk, regardless of the bet.

  • It's a bit of a mental rollercoaster (aka mind f*ckery). Sometimes you're up, sometimes you're down, and things can take a turn at the most unexpected moments.

  • You can jump from machine to machine looking for the "one that is going to pay out" much like marketing strategies or finding the "right" coach.

  • With a positive attitude, it's really fun. Not every spin will be a winner. Not every day in business is either.

  • Invest for the long term, be consistent, and you have a better shot at coming out ahead.

The remarks above are not to be used for gambling advice.

However, the Kenny Rogers slot machine can suck it.

Thanks for reading all the way through this! Until next time, friends...
